The Social Innovation Camp starts with a big, open call for ideas. Anyone can enter an idea for a web-based social innovation. National Health & Disability Strategy
National Arts and Disability Strategy

Arts Minister Peter Garrett and the Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities, Bill Shorten commended the Cultural Ministers Council for endorsing the National Arts and Disability Strategy at their national meeting.

“Arts and culture enriches us all – and with one in five Australians experiencing some form of disability, it has been an imperative to include and enable everyone who wishes to engage with such a vital part of Australian life,” said Mr Garrett.

The National Arts and Disability Strategy came out of a consultation process between the Cultural Ministers Council and the arts and disability sector, including organisations and individuals, and with submissions from arts practitioners and arts consumers in the sector.

“We now strongly recommend that state and local governments, venue owners and others review this important document and incorporate it into their future planning and approach,” Mr Garrett said.

“Australians with a disability face barriers to participation, whether physical, financial or social,” said Mr Shorten.

“This strategy sits under a broader national strategic policy push to get people past these barriers and into full participation in the life of the community.”

Partnerships among governments, and between governments and the private and non-profit sectors, are a vital component of the strategy, which guides partners to identify and develop priority projects.

Four priority areas are set out in the National Arts and Disability Strategy: finding ways to address barriers to participation, as audiences or in arts practice; aiding ambition, and helping emerging professional arts practitioners; growing audiences for work created by those with a disability; and empowering people to participate in arts policy development and planning.

The Australian Government provides financial and secretariat support to the Cultural Ministers Council through the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts.

For copies of the Strategy, including accessible formats, see the Cultural Ministers Council website here or contact the Cultural Ministers Council Secretariat at contact@cmc.gov.au

Australia party to UN convention on Protection & Promotion of Diversity of Cultural Expressions
Australia has become a party to the United Nations Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, Arts Minister Peter Garrett announced today.

"The Convention is an international treaty that outlines protective measures for cultural goods, services and activities and the importance of access to a rich diversity of cultural expressions from around the world. Importantly, it also aims to strengthen links between culture and economic development," Mr Garrett said.

"The Convention is open to all United Nations members that may wish to become a party and Australia is the 101st member to do so. Under the provisions of the Convention, it will enter into force for Australia three months after Australia officially became a party on 18 September 2009.

"This is an important step in support of our diverse cultural heritage and a vital artistic life for our citizens and fulfils a key Labor election commitment." The Convention emphasises that culture plays an important role in fostering international collaboration. It promotes tolerance and respect for all cultures, and encourages countries to take measures that protect and promote their culture, and allow and encourage a diversity of cultural expressions from around the world.

"Through a comprehensive range of funding programs and policies spread across the full spectrum of cultural, arts and heritage activities, the Australian Government is already taking strong action to protect and encourage cultural diversity within Australia, and to promote international cooperation through dialogue and cultural exchange," Mr Garrett said.

"An International Fund for Cultural Diversity is administered under the Convention, and parties can apply there for funding for projects and activities that further the Convention's aims".

Music for Every Child in Australia!

Music Education
Dear Players for Life
The transcript is now available of Radio National's Background Briefing on school music education:
http://musicplayforlife.org/school-music-transcript

The program, which aired for the first time last Sunday, comprises 50 stellar minutes in which Stephen Crittenden brilliantly presents the arguments about the importance of music education for EVERY child in school and the facts about the inequities and inadequacies of its provision in Australia.

Campaign stalwarts, Richard Letts (MCA), Ian Harvey (AMA), Jane Law (primary principal) and Mandy Stefanakis (music educator) and Deborah Nicolson (The Song Room) are interviewed, together with long-time advocate, Richard Gill and academic, Robert Walker.

The issues raised in the program are fundamental to the core purpose of Music. Play for Life, which is to encourage a musically active life: whoever you are, wherever you are and whatever your stage of life.

Most people are not music insiders. Most people want music mandated in ALL Australian schools. Most people are gobsmacked when they realise the lack of music that's actually being provided in our schools. Most teachers and principals would love to be able to offer more, but there's a lack of political will in Australia, compared to many other nations.

Be an advocate for music: send this transcript to anyone with kids, forward it to your local Member of Parliament, run pertinent excerpts in your school newsletter, send it on to community musicians in your neighbourhood, if you know bastions of commerce and industry - pass on the transcript, or summarise it and gee them up to use their influence with State and Federal politicians!

Reconciliation Action Plan
Queensland Government Reconciliation Action Plan 2009 – 2012 (RAP) is a 3 year action plan to foster reconciliation across the state. This is the first whole of government reconciliation action plan in Australia.

The RAP builds on the Council of Australian Government's Closing the Gap commitments. It signals to the wider community that the Queensland Government is getting on with the job of working in partnership to make a difference to the life outcomes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders.

The RAP, which has been fully supported by Reconciliation Australia and Reconciliation Queensland Incorporated, examines reconciliation in 4 areas - relationships, respect, opportunities and accountability. It also sets out practical targets.

All Queensland agencies will be active players in delivering on the RAP, including reporting annually on their progress.

There is a role for the private sector and wider community too.

Reconciliation – it's everyone's business.

Healing Foundation Development Team

Submissions of projects to A& TSI Healing Foundation
Hi folks from The Breakfast Circle, the Indigenous Family Violence Forum 2009 and friends and colleagues…

Please see below an invitation and strong encouragement for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their advocates to make submissions to the Healing Foundation Development Team established by the Commonwealth. It is critical that the Team receive submissions which advocate for healing responses which respect traditional healing lest western models prevail and another opportunity to pass on traditional ways is lost….

Thanks Monique at ANTaR for setting out so clearly the providence of this request.
If you or you colleagues or friends can be involved, please see the link below and / or encourage others to do so.

Submissions close 31 July.

New Arts Page for Doctors on website of Medical Observer
Dear All,

As an organisation dedicated to mobilising the world of healthcare in the service of the performing arts, ASPAH is delighted to be involved with the new Arts Page on the website of the national medical broadsheet paper, Medical Observer. While it principally showcases the creative endeavours of doctors around the country, this permanent part of the site will, we hope, act as a venue for discussing the place of healthcare in the artistic life of Australia in the broadest possible sense. ASPAH's presence on the page, and our ongoing dialogue with the papers editor, Kellie Bissett, will hopefully give performing arts healthcare a national profile amongst doctors it never has before.

And it is also just a very good read.

The page, which is being launched with a dedicated edition of the paper this week, can be found at www.medicalobserver.com.au/arts.

Take a look!

Cheers

"Oodgeroo, bloodline to country" by Sam Watson
Oodgeroo, bloodline to country <http://www.laboite.com.au/01_cms/details.asp?ID=65>
by Sam Watson
La Boite Theatre, Kelvin Grove

She was Oodgeroo, Custodian of Minjerribah and senior lore woman of the Noonuccal people. In November 1974, a BOAC aircraft was hijacked in Dubai by Palestinian terrorists. The aircraft was flown to Tunisia and held on the tarmac for three days. Kath Walker, member of the steering committee for the 2nd World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture meeting in Nigeria, and later to be Oodgeroo Noonuccal, was on that plane.

Walker pleaded with the hijackers on behalf of the passengers, particularly a German banker who had been targeted for execution. Despite Walker's efforts, the German was shot and his body dumped on the tarmac. This traumatic event, and her regret at her inability to save the man's life, stayed with Kath Walker throughout her life.

Oodgeroo’s way was negotiation, but her son's was armed struggle. In Brisbane in 1971, along with Sam Watson the author of this startling new play, Denis Walker co-founded the Australian Black Panthers, based on the radical and often violent American civil rights organisation.

This new production, created with the involvement of Oodgeroo's family, weaves her family and cultural life with her time on the Tunisian tarmac to tell the previously untold story of the tensions that tore at the fabric of one of Australia’s most prominent families.

Service is the most trusted charity."
Part of my fundraising plan is to invite 10 4WD's to come on an organised 21 day, fun filled
